Background of the study
Sport-based youth programs have emerged as effective tools for promoting social integration, particularly in communities facing social fragmentation. In Delta State, such programs provide structured environments where young people engage in team sports, skill development, and community-building activities. These initiatives create opportunities for interaction across diverse social and cultural backgrounds, fostering a sense of belonging and shared identity (Okafor, 2023). Through participation in sports, youth learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and resilience, which can translate into broader social integration. Additionally, sport-based programs contribute to reducing delinquency and encouraging positive social behavior by channeling youthful energy into constructive activities. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited access to sports facilities, and socio-cultural biases may impede the full potential of these programs. This study evaluates the role of sport-based youth programs in promoting social integration in Delta State, assessing their effectiveness and identifying best practices and obstacles that influence their success (Akinyemi, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the potential of sport-based youth programs to foster social integration, many initiatives in Delta State face challenges that limit their effectiveness. Issues such as resource constraints, lack of trained coaches, and social prejudices can restrict youth participation and undermine program outcomes. These challenges may hinder the development of social cohesion and the overall benefits expected from such programs. An in-depth assessment is needed to understand these barriers and to propose practical solutions to optimize the impact of sports on youth integration (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
